Most AR problems are preventable — they start the moment you accept a load from a broker without checking how they've treated other carriers.
Where to Check Payment History
- Load board credit scores — most major boards show broker credit ratings and average days-to-pay.
- Carrier forums and groups — informal, but patterns of complaints about a specific broker are worth taking seriously.
- Your own records — if you've worked with a broker before, your own invoice history tells you more than any third-party score.
What to Look For
A broker with a consistently high days-to-pay average, even if it's technically within their stated terms, tells you what to expect. A pattern of disputed invoices or short-pays is a bigger red flag than a single slow payment.
What to Do With That Information
You don't have to refuse a load from a slower-paying broker — but you can price accordingly, require tighter documentation, or use factoring specifically for that broker's loads to remove the wait entirely.
