Your First 30 Days as a New Motor Carrier

The day your authority activates, the real work starts. Here's what actually matters in the first 30 days.

Week 1: Confirm Everything Is Actually Active

Double-check your MC authority status, insurance filing, and IRP/IFTA registration are all confirmed — not just submitted. A gap here can shut you down mid-load.

Week 2: Set Up Your Systems Before You Need Them

Get your ELD, dispatch/load tracking process, and basic bookkeeping set up before your first load, not during it. Trying to build systems while also running freight is how paperwork gets missed.

Week 3: Book Conservatively

Resist the urge to take every load offered. Early on, prioritize loads with reliable brokers and reasonable rates over maximum volume — you're still learning your own cost per mile and margin thresholds.

Week 4: Review Your Numbers

By the end of the month, calculate your actual cost per mile against what you've been charging. Most new carriers are surprised by how thin their real margin is once every cost is counted.
